Audience:
Substance abuse counselors, social workers, mental health counselors, nurses, recovery counselors and interested human services professionals.

Purpose
The purpose of the presentation is to enhance the participant’s awareness of the historical Military perspective of PTSD and to enhance the practitioner’s awareness and skill level in working with the Military client. Attendees will be able to observe Government propaganda documentary that were once kept hidden from the public. They will also hear from a Military Chaplain regarding the viewpoint of moral injury and tips in dealing with military enculturation.

Objectives
• To gain a historical perspective of PTSD
• To develop and understanding of the impact of military culture on treatment
• To learn about the perspective of moral injury and recovery
• To enhance skill levels in working with PTSD
• To expose participants to virtual treatment

Faculty:
Gary Schmidt LMHC, LIMHP, NCC is a mental health therapist, licensed in Iowa and Nebraska. He has practiced in the Siouxland area for several decades as a therapist, therapist supervisor, program manager, and clinical director. He received his Bachelors in Psychology and Master’s degree in Counseling from Wayne State College. He served as the clinical director for an adolescent facility in Fairbanks, Alaska from 2010 to 2012. In Alaska he worked with native populations and traveled by bush plan to a remote fishing village to provide suicide prevention to village elders. He is currently working as a federal employee of the Air Force, providing consultation and support for the 185 Air Refueling Wing of the Iowa Air National Guard. Specialties include sexual trauma, major mental illness, PTSD, and resiliency. He is the base Suicide Prevention Program Manager, Disaster Mental Health team lead, Director of Psychological Health, Airman and Family Readiness Program Manager, and Master Resiliency Trainer. He received the Iowa Commendation Medal in 2016 and the Iowa Meritorious Service Medal in 2017 for excellence in service.
