Impact of Addiction on Families

Audience:
Substance abuse counselors, social workers, mental health counselors, nurses, recovery counselors and interested human services professionals.

Purpose:
Addiction is a primary, chronic, and progressive disease. It impacts the entire family system. Treatment outcomes are generally more successful when the entire family is taken into account. This training will focus on engaging the entire family in the treatment process. It will examine ways that the family unit has been disrupted or negatively impacted by addictions and ways the family can heal together.

Objectives:
• Become familiar with several myths of addiction. These myths are widely believed by many members of our society.
• Identify symptoms experienced by impacted family members or concerned people
• Know how the stages of change apply to family members and loved ones
• Learn ways family members adjust to addictions (i.e. family roles)
• Learn activities that can be utilized to engage family members of all ages in the treatment process
• Learn ways to help a loved one in crisis
Faculty:
Nicholas Brown, LMHC, IADC, NCC is a Clinical Supervisor / Therapist / Clinical Interventionist at Jackson Recovery Centers’ River Hills Recovery Center. Since 2009, Nicholas has worked within the Sioux City metro area as a clinical therapist. He is a certified Parent-Child Interaction Therapist through PCIT International. Nicholas has extensive experience working with culturally diverse populations. He is bilingual and conducts sessions in both English and Spanish. In addition to children’s services, other specialty areas include substance abuse and process addictions counseling.

Tiffany Castle, LMSW, CADC is a Therapist / Clinical Interventionist at Jackson Recovery Centers’ River Hills Recovery Center. Since 2012, she has worked as a therapist with adults, adolescents, and children. She is trained in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy through the University of Iowa. Tiffany completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in counseling psychology from Morningside College and her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Iowa. In addition to children’s services, she specializes in Adlerian Sandtray Therapy and substance abuse counseling.
