Audience:
Substance abuse and mental health counselors, social workers, nurses, recovery counselors and interested human services professionals.

Purpose:
This training will address ethic decision making and considerations in the behavioral healthcare environment. With a focus on the Jackson Code of Conduct and it’s similarities to other disciplines’ ethical guidelines, we will discuss how these codes relate to clinical and professional decision making. Issues that will be addressed include: competence and scope of practice, social media/peer relationships and boundaries, adolescent/family boundaries, and the impaired professional. In addition, we will discuss the concept of vicarious trauma and the important role of self-care for professionals.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:
• Identify common ethical situations and high risk behaviors.
• Identify process and steps for ethical decision making
• Apply common elements of professional codes of conduct to practical and professional situations.
• Identify possible ethical/boundary issues related to working with adolescents and their families
• Identify signs and symptoms of vicarious trauma and how it can impact human service professionals
• Identify how self-care practices are related to ethical decision making

Faculty:

Gladys Smith, LISW, LMHP is a Program Manager at Jackson Recovery Centers Adolescent Inpatient Program. She has worked with at risk children, adolescents and their families for over 35 years. Gladys completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Briar Cliff College, and her Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Nebraska, Omaha. She has had professional experience and continuing education in the area of Trauma Informed Care. Gladys has been with Jackson Recovery Centers for 7 ½ years.

Beth Wiltgen has worked in the behavioral health field for over 30 years and has been the Director of Information and Technology for Jackson Recovery Centers for the last 19 years. She also serves as Jackson’s Privacy Officer and previously served for several years on Jackson’s Professional Staff Organization (PSO). Prior to joining Jackson, Beth was an Instructor of Psychology with Briar Cliff College and had previous behavioral health experience in a variety of settings (IDD, child/adult/family mental health and substance abuse).
