Staff Training - Current Drug Trends in Siouxland

Audience:
Substance abuse counselors, social workers, mental health counselors, nurses, recovery counselors and interested human services professionals.

Purpose:
It’s almost impossible to keep up with the ever-changing synthetic drugs that are hitting the market. Learn how to recognize these new psychoactive substances, how they’re obtained, what they do, how they’re use, why they’re so readily available and how they impact communities. This training will also focus on other emerging trends and patterns of drug use including heroin, fentanyl and other opioids. We’ll look at what’s being sold and used right here in Sioux City.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will:
• Become familiar with current drug trends and emerging drugs of abuse
• Describe what emerging designer synthetic drugs are
• Know how they’re manufactured and sold
• Know the dangers they pose
• Where they’re sold in Sioux City
• Who is at risk for abusing them

Faculty:
Linda Kalin, RN, BS, CSPI, is the Executive Director of the Iowa Poison Control Center. She has more than 25 years of experience in clinical toxicology and poison center activities. Linda began her career as an emergency room nurse and in 1989 became Iowa’s first Certified Specialist in Poison Information. She is an adjunct faculty member and preceptor for the University of Iowa and Drake’s College of Pharmacy and was awarded Preceptor of the Year from both schools. She is a frequent lecturer and speaker on topics involving drugs of abuse.
Officer Heather Albrecht has been employed with the Sioux City Police Department since 2004. During her career she has served in the Uniform Division and Investigations Division. From 2007 through 2012 she was assigned to the Crimes Against Persons Unit. Since 2013, she has been assigned to the Tri-State Drug Task Force.

Officer Cindy Martinez has been employed with the Sioux City Police Department for about 5 years. During most of her career she served in the Uniform Division. Two years ago, she was assigned to the Drug Task Force Unit.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs):
Program approved for 3 hours of continuing education with IBSAC for Iowa Substance Abuse Counselors and 3 hours of continuing Social Work education. Jackson Recovery Centers is an Iowa Board of Social Work Examiners approved provider #0241.
