Phoenix Project

Jackson Recovery Centers, with the support of the Woodbury County Sheriff's Department and other community organizations, provides outpatient treatment to men and women with drug and alcohol addiction and involvement in the criminal justice system. By involving offenders in a combination of research-based therapies, both while in jail and after release, the objective is to reduce recidivism and substance abuse in the community. The treatment program will afford patients the opportunity to rise up from the ashes of addiction and criminal behavior and start living a pro-social life of recovery.

The Phoenix Program consists of in-jail intensive treatment for a period of forty-five to sixty days. Upon completion of in-jail treatment, the patient is then transferred to the Phoenix Project's extended outpatient treatment program, which is conducted at Jackson Recovery Centers. The extended outpatient program is for a period of four to six months, depending on the patient's progress. The Phoenix Program is based on changing the patient's criminal/addictive thinking patterns, attitudes, and beliefs that support criminal addictive lifestyle and replace them with health ones supportive of long-term recovery.

Some of the elements of this cognitive-behavioral treatment curriculum include:

  • Drug and alcohol education
  • Criminal and addictive thinking
  • Relapse prevention
  • Release and reintegration preparation
  • Social skill development
  • 12-Step recovery tools/principles
  • Coping skill development
